Praha
Prague, Czech Republic
Show StoryCoins tossed from a passerby rattle in front of a local accordion player. He takes no interest in their worth. Continues playing without pause. His deep trance evident by the wild jerking movements he makes, closing and opening the bellows. This scene unfolds on the famous George bridge in mid-summer, where a kaleidoscope of busker artists and street performers are brought together to entertain the mass of tourists who yearn for this seductive place.
Today “The City of a Thousand Spires” has firmly secured its place as one of the draw-card classical cities in Europe: its alluring architecture and cobblestone streets bring flocks of tourists all year round. Throughout the last twenty years, this historical destination has morphed into one of the most desired of Europe.
Prague’s modern rise came with the breakdown of the Communist Party in 1989, following the Velvet Revolution. Students, no doubt influenced by the fall of The Berlin Wall, demonstrated fiercely. Their victory was one against a single-state party that had administered over Czechoslovakia since the Second World War. Prague’s entry into the free world was primed.
The early nineties saw Prague’s profile change from a closed communist city to a newly discovered destination. It became a cultural center of artistic freedom and saw groups of writers, artists and ex-pats flock the city. Akin to Paris in the twenties, waves of influential newcomers bring their talents from afar to embrace the city.
This series of images was inspired by the creative atmosphere that a new generation of Czechs and foreigners bring to Prague. Shot from multiple locations, the transition of seasons plays a dramatic influence in capturing one of Europe’s most endearing cities.
